About this product
Songwriter / producer Larry Banks worked a lot with girl groups in the late 60s, particularly for GWP productions. The Geminis and Exciters tracks he produced were issued on the RCA imprint... but the equally good Devonnes recordings failed to make it to wax. Kent accessed the master tapes some twenty years ago and released all four of their performances. The catchy dancer 'Doin' InchThe Gittin' UpInch' first came out on a 100 Club anniversary 45 in 2005 and has been in demand ever since. '(You'd Better) Straighten Up And Fly Right' was issued on CD in the same year, but has never made it to vinyl until now. The song was recorded by Terri Bryant on Verve in 1967 and is highly regarded; this new coupling will be a popular choice. Album Tracks 1. (You'd Better) Straighten Up and Fly Right - the Devonnes 2. Doin' InchThe Gittin' UpInch - the Devonnes

The Devonns dust off the golden age of Chicago Soul. Straight from the streets of Chicago, Illinois, The Devonns (pronounced InchDe vaughnsInch) are the brand new soul outfit and the latest addition of the Record Kicks' family, whose self-titled debut album that drops April 06, is an assortment of influences taking us back to the heyday of soul. InchTell MeInch is the 1st single from their anticipated full length and sees the lights on limited edition 45 on March 06 and digital. Drawing influences from bands such as The Dramatics, The Isley Brothers and Leroy Hutson, yet bringing in their own unique modern twist, influenced by artists such as Jamie Lidell and Raphael Saadiq; singer Mat Ajjarapu explains how unintentionally, the rich heritage of Chicago's history with soul music influenced him. InchThe city was at the epicentre of a lot of good music back in the 50's all the way to the 80's, a lot of the labels specialising in soul were based in the Chicago and we even had our own sound known as InchChicago soulInch. Through several years of crate digging it surprised me how many songs I loved were recorded in this city, for example one of my favourites is this great little song by The Natural Four, produced by Leroy Hutson 'Can This Be Real', and released via Curtom Records.Inch The band started in 2016 after multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Mathew Ajjarapu dropped out of med school and found himself unemployed and drifting. Listening to music constantly at the time, he found inspired to put a band together and create his own music. Pairing up with some of the best musicians Chicago has to offer, he founded The Devonns the rhythm duty is entrusted to Khalyle Hagood (bass), Ari Lindo (guitar) and Khori Wilson (drums). Originally he wanted to focus on 50s style doo-wop, similar to The Flamingos; rich in reverb and vocal harmonies, but in the first initial practise

From a funky basement in Nashville, TN comes the third 45 from The Gripsweats. Nasty, vocal shout style NOLA funk. Heavy, dirty, raw, and in the cut. This one is meant for playing loud in the clubs. A classic part 1 / part 2 approach to this sweaty dancefloor burner. Album Tracks 1. G'on Use It (Pt. 1) 2. G'on Use It (Pt. 2)

The only cover tune on Carlton Jumel Smith's Inch1634 Lexington Ave.Inch album is not really a cover at all, since it was first cut by Carlton himself already 10 years ago. The sultry 2009 edition of InchI'd BetterInch, that was put out on the short-lived UK Soulchoonz tag, is a nice piece of programmed mid-tempo modern soul. The new version, now getting a 7Inch single treatment on Timmion, still sounds miles away from the polished earlier effort. It starts off with a nice guitar led beat before settling into a sweet Tighten Up groove, a funky road which still has plenty curves to explore, even for Cold Diamond & Mink, who are certainly not lifting water from this particular well for the first time. What remains naturally is Carlton's ultra-soulful vocal performance, and a message of manning up to the max, staying true to your word in front of something divine. It's not that often you hear a more recent version of a song sounding so that you would think it's the old version. Essentially, what you get is a beautiful piece of xover soul, with timeless swagger, and an instrumental with soulful legs of it's own. Album Tracks 1. I'd Better 2. I'd Better (Instrumental)
