Considered one of the most unjustly underrated jazz greats of the 1950s, and certainly the most accomplished modern jazz harpist ever, Dorothy Ashby (1932-1986) established by herself the harp as an improvising jazz instrument. While until then the instrument had been just used as a novelty mixed with the sound of a string orchestra (as on Charlie Parker with Strings in 1950), Ashby proved the harp could play bebop as adeptly as any other instrument. Despite being titled just with her name, the 1961 LP presented here wasn't her debut album (she had previously issued three other starting with Jazz Harpist in 1954), but her fourth. 180-Gram Virgin Vinyl Limited Edition of 1000 copies. Both a successful singer and actress, Julie London was a truly legendary figure. While her work as an actress would precede and have greater longevity than her career as a vocalist, it wasn't until she released her debut album Julie Is Her Name, that London truly became a household name. No one could have imagined the album's success considering that it was the first LP of a still relatively unknown singer, and only featured guitar and bass accompaniment (even if the guitar player was such an important jazz star as Barney Kessel). 180-gram VIRGIN VINYL LIMITED EDITION of 1000 COPIES. The Complete Album + 4 Bonus Tracks.
Julie Is Her Name - Volume Two has all the sincerity and warmth of her professional album debut, the best-selling Julie Is Her Name, from Liberty. An untested singer with uncompromising musical faith, an unknown record company, sophisticated, tastefully presented standards presented simply backed by just a bass and guitar - Julie Is Her Name faced long odds of success. Yet it soared to become a best-selling hit. Julie London rose to the Top 10 of every list of female vocalists. Album Tracks 1. Blue Moon 2. What Is This Thing Called Love 3. How Long Has This Been Going on 4. Too Good to Be True 5. Spring Is Here 6. Goody Goody 7. I Should Care 8. No Moon at All 9. Cry Me a River 10. The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else 11. If I'm Lucky 12. Hot Today 13. Little White Lies 14. I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan 15. I Got Lost in His Arms 16. Can't Help Lovin' That Man 17. I'm Glad There Is You 18.
