After a boxed set devoted to nineteenth-century French music (Alpha, 2015) and another containing Beethoven's symphonies and overtures (Alpha, 2018), Jos Van Immerseel and his period-instrument ensemble Anima Eterna present an anthology of seven albums including recordings of major nineteenth- and twentieth-century composers of many nationalities. Whether it is Liszt with his symphonic poems, Orff with his Carmina Burana or Gershwin with his Rhapsody in Blue, all of them seem to be driven by a deep-seated urge to push back the formal limits of orchestral music by confronting it with other traditions and musical horizons, thus giving it a universal resonance. Ballad of a Tryhard is the bold third album by Scott Hardware, the moniker of Toronto-based musician and composer Scott Harwood. It's a record filled with unselfconsciously ambitious Y2K rock; a reimagination of experimental adult contemporary that tweaks the limits of soft rock with curiosity and appreciation.Hardware conducts a painstaking character evaluation to better understand the world by looking inward. Suspended and exalting, the album bursts with cinematic flourishes that ring with a courageous form of earnestness.Crafted in Spain and co-produced with Matt Smith (Prince Nifty, Owen Pallett,) the album features guest performances from members of Phedre, Lee Paradise, WHIMM, Vallens, Blunt Chunks, and Jaunt.Summer 5 22Mediterranean 6 03Another Day Ending 4 34Is Something Wrong Tonight 5 54Love Through The Trees 4 22Watersnake 3 26Dentera 4 50 Sing Like That 4 54Bootleg 4 32Underdog 4 16
