About this product

The mysterious Dr. John, the Night Tripper didn't just spring forth fully formed from some second-line psychedelic vacuum, tossing gris-gris and voodoo trinkets to the winds and modeling the wildest threads to come out of the deepest recesses of the south Louisiana swamp, to take a seat behind the 88s and gleefully expand the outermost limits of late '60s pop music. A full decade earlier, his short hair greased back and a Telecaster in his mitts, the same musical force was a teenage A&R man with a cherubic face at Johnny Vincent's Ace Records, learning his craft as a Crescent City songwriter, producer, session man, and occasional recording artist named Mac Rebennack. Those glorious early sides are the basis of the compilation. Album Tracks 1. Storm Warning 2. Bad Neighborhood 3. Down the River 4. Sahara 5. It Ain't No Use 6. Remember Me 7. Morgus the Magnificent 8. South of the Border Town 9. Something Special 10. Lonely Boy 11. Good Times 12. You Told Me You Don't Love Me 13. Because I Do 14. Feedbag 15. Row Row My Boat 16. Keeps Dragging Me on 17. Foolish Little Girl 18. I Wanna 19. Aw! Who? 20. Mercy 21. Symphony Two 22. The Honeydripper Part 2

Com) • Produced in full cooperation with the Dr. John Estate Mac Rebennack, widely known as Dr. John, changed the course of popular music starting with his 1968 debut, Gris Gris and pushed it further with each new album, infusing his recordings with exciting new directions and influences while throwing off hits like InchRight Place, Wrong TimeInch and InchSuch A NightInch in his wake. We are fortunate that the music continued to pour out of him until the world lost him in 2019 - five decades after we'd first been hoodood. The Estate of Dr. John and Omnivore Recordings are pleased to present Live At The Village Gate, a previously unheard performance (unless you were lucky enough to be there), recorded on the evening of March 5, 1988. The set features classics like InchMess Around, Inch InchGeorgia On My Mind, Inch and InchMardi Gras DayInch - and even a crowd request for InchMama RouxInch from his aforementioned debut album, Gris Gris - all, of course, played to perfection. With mastering and restoration by multiple Grammy-winning engineer Michael Graves, Live At The Village Gate also includes new and informative line notes from The Second Disc's Joe Marchese.
