About this product

This previously unreleased live recording of Jacqueline du Pré playing the Schumann Cello Concerto is her first public performance of the work, given in the Royal Festival Hall on 12 December 1962 with Jean Martinon conducting the BBCSO. She had worked intensively on the concerto with Paul Tortelier in Paris prior to this concert. When Du Pré studied the Schumann with Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatoire in 1966, he exclaimed, 'This is the most perfect Schumann I have ever heard'. The 1962 live performance of the Dvorák Cello Concerto by Rostropovich has also never before been released. He is partnered by Carlo Maria Giulini, who went on to to make a studio recording of the same concerto with him in 1977. The Times critic described this Edinburgh Festival performance as an 'exciting' and 'emotionally supercharged interpretation' with Giulini's reading 'full of finely wrought points of detail'. The attractive bonus features Rostropovich and his wife Galina Vishnevskaya in the Ária from Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras. Album Tracks 1. I. Nicht Zu Schnell - Jacqueline Du PRÉ/BBC Symphony Orchestra 2. II. Langsam - Etwas Lebhafter - Tempo I - Schneller - Jacqueline Du PRÉ/BBC Symphony Orchestra 3. III. Simon Callow - Sword in the Soul - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In an album that includes world-premiere recordings, Michael Waldron and the London Choral Sinfonia perform Francis Grier's modern-day Passion, Sword in the Soul, to texts by Rowan Williams narrated by Simon Callow, Samantha Bond and Adrian Peacock. Alongside Grier's Sword in the Soul, we hear Lux Eterna, the profoundly moving choral setting of Elgar's famous 'Nimrod' from his Enigma Variations, as well as a rarely-heard piece by Elgar recorded only once before the intensely poignant We Will Remember Them, a beautiful and simple a cappella arrangement of a famous text. The album also features music by contemporary composer David Bednall, and LCS's Composer in Residence Owain Park. Album Tracks 5. Sword in the Soul~V. O Lord, Thou Hast Duped Me 8. Sword in the Soul~VIII. Narration 4 14. Phos hilaron~Hail, Gladdening Light

Sinfonia Varsovia - Richard Stohr: Orchestral Music, Vol. 4 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

From the early days of the twentieth century until the Anschluss forced him into American exile, Richard Stohr (1874-1967) was one of the more prominent personalities in Viennese musical life, as composer, teacher and author. Earlier releases in this series of recordings revealed him to have an individual voice, somewhere between Bruckner, Mahler, Korngold and Strauss. It can be heard in it's full glory in his Chamber Symphony of 1912, a sunlit score modest in it's orchestral demands but expansive in it's ambit and generous in it's ceaseless flow of gorgeous melody. Album Tracks 1. Chamber Symphony in F major, Op. 32, for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, strings and harp~I. Allegro 2. Chamber Symphony in F major, Op. 32, for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, strings and harp~II. Andante quasi marcia 3. Chamber Symphony in F major, Op. 32, for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, strings and harp~III. Allegro 4. Chamber Symphony in F major, Op. 32, for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, strings and harp~IV. Un poco grave - Allegro

Jason Moran - Shards - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Shards is a oneness of performance and transformation, transformation as performance. As Jason Moran and Marcus Gilmore play, BlankFor. Ms records micro fragments of time and sends them back to his collaborators sped up, slowed down, reversed, broken into ever tinier grains of data and smeared into a sparkling blur. Moran and Gilmore receive glimpses into their immediate past, or even further back in time, like they're playing into a broken mirror - not just cracked in it's visual plane, but in the sense of it's shards shattering time and light, showing them past and future. Album Tracks 1. Shard I 2. Tape Loop a Echo 3. Shard II 4. Shard III 5. Barbershop 6. And the Pieces Are Falling 7. Shard IV 8. Shard V
