About this product
Carolina-born Houston Person is a towering figure in the world of soulful Jazz. His albums for Prestige, Muse, Westbound and beyond have always been joyous affairs, filled with soul and aimed at those who like their Jazz with a beat. Until now the three albums which he recorded for the Detroit-based Westbound tag and it's subsidiary Eastbound have never been reissued. This pairs his second and third albums for them. Person made his name in Johnny 'Hammond' Smith's group between 1963 and 1966; in 1967 he signed as a band leader to Prestige, where his album GOODNESS was a hit. He moved to Eastbound in 1973 and when it closed moved to it's parent for the of HOUSTON PERSON '75, the first album he produced himself. It is a raucous party with Person's sax lines playing over some tight funky arrangements; one track features Etta Jones. GET OUT'A MY WAY follows in the same vein, an excellent soulful Jazz album which suits Person's style. It also includes a version of the Isley Brothers For the Love of You'. Featuring musical backing from the Westbound Gang and backing vocals by Honey, it is a fine addition to Person's catalog. Album Tracks 1. I Like to Live the Love 2. What It Is 3. Shotgun 4. Mayola 5. Tenor saxophonist Houston Person's playing has a lot in common with an ideally brewed cup of coffee. Both are bold, satisfying, smooth, eye-opening and addictive once experienced. Whether it be during smoldering blues-tinged numbers, up-tempo takes on old favorites, or sultry, late-night balladry, Person never fails to deliver a performance where expressivity reigns supreme. The band is made up of a group from Person's cadre of regular colleagues with guitar great Russell Malone adding his sensitive voicings and swinging rhythms to the mix. The album's title is an homage to the legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Person's first recording as a leader was done at Rudy's fabled Englewood Cliffs studio and they continued their friendship until Van Gelder's passing. But this is a not a backward-looking memorial album. That is not Person's style. Based on his performance schedule and his extensive discography, Houston Person, like his fans, is always looking forward to his next gig. Album Tracks 1. At Long Last Love 2. Again 3. Moon River 4. Put Your Head on My Shoulder 5. Why Did I Choose You 6. Nothing Ever Changes My Love for You 7. My Romance 8. I'll Let You Know 9. Please Send Me Someone to Love 10. Reminiscing at Rudy's
