About this product

UK collection. The latest in Ace Records' popular Songwriters series is a kaleidoscopic trip into the craft of one of the most covered and influential artists of the '60s. The body of work he wrote and recorded during the golden period we celebrate on Hurdy Gurdy Songs has become one of the most critically and commercially successful of the era, and continues to attract new listeners and demand reappraisal; proof that Donovan - the psychedelic minstrel whose records colored the late 60s pop landscape - was one of a kind. A prolific writer, he gifted a number of songs to other artists 'You Just Gotta Know My Mind' and 'Snakeskin' appear on our collection and serve to illustrate the widespread appeal of his material to female interpreters as diverse as Eartha Kitt, Peggy Lipton and Bridget St John. Donovan's whirlwind journey through the second half of the 60s left him beaten and bruised but the music he created - in which the eclectic influences of pop, spirituality, poetry, magic and the spirit of the age found their way into these unique and enduring songs - continues to thrill and beguile today. Album Tracks 1. Museum - Herman's Hermits 2. Superlungs - Terry Reid 3. Sunny Goodge Street - Tom Northcott 4. The Pebble and the Man - Bridget St John 5. Sunshine Superman - the Standells 6. Hurdy Gurdy Man - Eartha Kitt 7. Young Girl Blues - Marianne Faithfull 8. Poor Cow - Noel Harrison 9. Celeste - Paul Jones 10. Season of the Witch - Lou Rawls 11. Donovan - The Hurdy Gurdy Man - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Hurdy Gurdy Man was Donovan's 1968 album, built up around the strong singles InchHurdy Gurdy ManInch and InchJennifer JuniperInch. Like Donovan's other Micky Most produced albums this one touches upon a great varity of musical styles and instrumentations, with tasteful and original arrangements by John Cameron. Some of the more rocking tunes were arranged by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin - e.g. The stunningly build-up title track, starting with Donovan's silent humming joined by his acoustic guitar and building up towords it's climax with electric guitars and drums. The overall sound-quality of this re-mastered version is great! Album Tracks 1. Hurdy Gurdy Man 2. Peregrine 3. The Entertaining of a Shy Girl 4. As I Recall It 5. Get Thy Bearings 6. Hi It's Been a Long Time 7. West Indian Lady 8. Jennifer Juniper 9. The River Song 10. Tangier 11. A Sunny Day 12. The Sun Is a Very Magic Fellow 13. Teas
