About this product
Jackie Cohen decided the only way forward was to succumb to crisis, to relax into it instead of fighting, to find beauty even in the flame-an approach that fuels her sublime new album, Pratfall, due September 9th. Because of the record's pandemic origins, Cohen was only aided in studio by two collaborators her husband, Foxygen's Jonathan Rado, and engineer Rias Reed. InchWe were a tight pod,Inch she laughs. The three musicians holed up at Sonora Recorders in Los Angeles, tapping into the studio's vaulted ceilings and haunted feeling to amplify Cohen's widescreen songwriting. InchElliott Smith recorded some stuff there, and it always seemed like there was a ghost banging around in there, turning lights on and off,Inch she says, before adding a cheery followup InchShakira recorded there too, can't forget another 5'2Inch icon.Inch On Pratfall, Cohen renders both extremes of that range of experience in warm, inviting indie pop. InchI didn't want to write a dirge inspired by the darkest moments of my life, I wanted a cathartic moment, to experience the emotion and build from it,Inch Cohen says. InchThis record is a climax where everything becomes explosive and you can just close your eyes, give in, and dance it off.Inch1. Two Days2. Coup de Grace3. The Valley4. Pratfall5. Ghost Story6. Zagg is me, my name, and this record is my first real, intentional, nearly unabashed step toward being myself confidently out in the world. Here I am! Here are my songs. Finally making this record was truly a Inchlife zaggInch for me. I quit my marketing job. I quit my teaching job. I quit my sausage sampling at the mall job. I started taking my meds as directed. This is my SSNRI record. I'm reflecting instead of spiraling. Got my egg cracked a few times but I'm landing sunny side up. Like the Bridge of Avignon, I am partly destroyed but quickly rebuilt. I'm in cahoots with the Avengers of record-making. Still not perfect, but what's so sexy about perfect? The intrigue's in the pockmarks. This record is extremely fun.Zagg is a Jonathan Rado + Matthew E. White co-production. We played X-Files on mute for the entire two weeks we spent tracking with the Spacebomb House Band. We all got the flu. Two among us came down with foot & mouth disease (won't name names). The playing and production is bright and beautiful across the whole grab-bag of love songs, laments, self-mortifications, meditations on sunscreen, hammer-anvil jams, and kit v. kit double drum cardio smash-bros looney tunes suicide pursuits. Don't get me started on Trey Pollard's freak-of-nature orchestral arrangements. Album Tracks 1. FMK 2. Caught in a Feeling 3. Get Out 4. Take Care of Your Skin 5. Chico Chico 6. My Size 7. All guitar instrumental recorded in Argentina by legendary guitarist Jim Campilongo. THE NEW YORK TIMES-InchThrough the lean ropy sound of his Fender Telecaster, Mr. Campilongo connects American styles (Blues, Rock, Country, Jazz, R&B) in a sly knowing way.Inch THE NEW YORKER- InchJim Campilongo holds court. American music is a melting pot of influences, but few guitarists capture the nuances as well as Campilongo does.Inch NY POST-InchCampilongo is one of those New York secrets. A master of the electric guitar, he weaves in spaghetti western picks, blues chords and jazz refs into his haunting tunes, a combo of originals and covers.Inch NYC VILLAGE VOICE-InchAn engaging improviser whose interest in entertainment is equal to his interest in art. His supple moves can keep an audience enthralled - meaning their asses wiggle and their minds jiggle.Inch JAZZTIMES-InchYou've got the makings of a very twisted guitar hero who deserves worshipping. Clever, crafty, quirky and cool.Inch THE NEW YORKER-InchThere it was again the stinging treble, the spooky overtones, the strings snapping and booming under his hands the sound of a Tele being played as skillfully and exuberantly as it can be played it sounded like nothing and nobody else sounded like Jim Campilongo.Inch TIMEOUT NEW YORK-InchNew York has no shortage of guitar heroes but few cover as many bases as Jim Campilongo reveals a range that extends from seductive country-swing to atmospheric jazz and well beyond.Inch Album Tracks 1. Until We Meet Again 2. Bernadette Maria 3. Grey to Blue 4. Mate Time 5. Man in a Ball, in a Ball 6. Over the Rainbow 7. Oblivion 8. Black Cat 9. Villa Crespo 10. More or Less
