About this product
File under Indie, Americana, Folk. Eponymous debut album from London trio Jessicas Brother, comprised of songwriter Tom Charleston, Jonny Helm (The Wave Pictures) and Charlie Higgs (Ramshackle Union Band). Channelling the spirit of the Brothers Grimm to create an otherworldly atmosphere, they weave their influences together making a rich and eclectic vision, with nods to Silver Jews, Jason Molina, Nick Cave, Richard Thompson and Neil Young. There are themes of joy, anger and silliness in a carefully crafted world with a colourful cast of characters. The trio formed in October 2016 and just nine months later they recorded the album with Laurie Sherman with input from Darren Hayman. A few other friends joined them including Dan Mayfield (Enderbys Room), who added a dose of Bad Seeds/Dirty Three vibes on the violin and Paul Rains (Allo Darlin/Tigercats) on guitar. Tom Charlestons songwriting is influenced more by poets than other musicians, he cites John Ashbery, T. S. Eliot and Philip Larkin as inspirations. Ten startling individual vignettes tell their own stories from a variety of narrators points of view. One Of The Guys, about the toxic nature of being one of the guys in a predatory pack. Overnight Horror revolves around the macho-masculine nightmare where, as Charleston explains, the world has gone head-over-heels shitward and the narrator is reduced to selling his daughter or his wife to stay alive. All The Better, is a hushed, eerie folk song exploring the melancholy and optimism of breaching adolescence and the limbo before adulthood. Weaving a variety of influences from jangly indie-rock to gothic country and contemplative psych folk, Jessicas Brother create the sound of a band coming together and getting caught up in the rush of starting new and enjoyable. Jessicas Brothers shambling nerdcore is clearly a passion project intended to please only themselves. Go

'Just Rain' is the second album from London 3 piece Jessica's Brother, comprising songwriter Tom Charleston, The Wave Pictures' Jonny Helm on drums and Charlie Higgs on bass. Stitching together a variety of influences, from crunching indie-rock, to gothic country and contemplative psych folk, Jessica's Brother create the sound of a band coming together and getting caught up in the rush of starting afresh. The disintegration of a long-term relationship, coinciding with a global fracturing, provided a catalyst for 'Just Rain'. The songs explore a relentless collision of melancholy and resilience alongside themes of comedy, agency, and hope. The title track lays this out with an opening burst of slacker rock as Tom reflects back over a passage of time that feels like persistent unrelenting rain. Vacillating between despair and defiance, we uncover the strength to shrug it off as Inchjust rainInch; after all, as the track draws to it's conclusion Inchlosing sight can be relievingInch. Interestingly, the lyric, Inchopen up your heart, it can help to wear a maskInch, was written before the pandemic had properly struck in the UK. 'Finding Snowdrop' is a spiritual rebirth gone wrong, influenced by the rambling poetry and hooks found in Yoni Wolf's Why? and Bill Callahan. On 'Full Swing' both the baritone of Tom's delivery and lyrics conjure the darkness of the everyday Inchcut my own brakes, living in hiding of lateInch are reminiscent of The Handsome Family's wonderful way of transposing the tradition of murder ballads and the bleakest tales to the modern. A more expansive and luxuriant sound runs through 'Just Rain', than the sparser Silver Jews / Jason Molina atmosphere of their 2018 debut, from the gutsy alt-rock of the title track to the off kilter pop of 'Little One', reminiscent of Sparklehorse, a tale of young love and youthful exuberance. Signed to the French based Carerre tag, home of Saxon, Rose Tattoo and Dokken, Liverpool's Rage quickly established themselves as an influential part of the emerging NWOBHM scene. This debut album, issued in 1981, was produced by man of the moment Pete Hinton (Saxon, Demon) giving the material a contemporary, rough-hewn, sheen. Musically, the songs focussed on tight riffs and memorable hooks, giving vocalist Dave Lloyd a to ably demonstrate his range and style. Album Tracks 1. Out of Control 2. What Have I Done Wrong? 3.
