About this product
Limited cloud-colored vinyl LP pressing. Originally released in October 2016 as a long-since sold-out self-released cassette, Hardly Art is proud to announce that Sleepyhead, the debut full-length from celebrated Chicago band Lala Lala, is now available again. Recorded in a basement over the course of five days during a typically-inhospitable Midwestern winter, Sleepyhead is an auspicious-if, at the time, criminally overlooked-debut effort from the young songwriter Lillie West and her then-lineup of supporting players (Abby Black on drums and Karl Bernasconi on bass). Unlike 2018's critically-acclaimed The Lamb, Sleepyhead is a rawer, more punked-up album with fewer lyrical metaphors obfuscating it's intimate, direct emotionality. Committed to tape in an urgent outburst of creative energy, the self-produced record eschews overdubs and takes unfussy aim at the listener's ears, heart, and the lump in their throat. Album standout InchF**k With Your FriendsInch was a breakthrough moment for West-it was the first song she ever wrote, one that tumbled out of her fully-formed, setting her on the path that's led to her recent successes. It's also emblematic of Sleepyhead's confessionalism and fearless forthrightness InchI drink more than I want to 'cause it makes you easier to talk to / And what you're saying is boring,Inch West sings.

Loser Edition on ocean blue vinyl. Lillie West has always made her music in response to an itch to always be moving. But, as she recently experienced a burgeoning desire to settle down, she realized that steadiness can beget creativity. That evolution is what fuels much of her new album as Lala Lala, Heaven 2. For many years, West lived in Chicago, where she established Lala Lala as part of that city's indie scene, releasing several records on the Sub Pop imprint Hardly Art. Those albums, The Lamb and I Want the Door to Open, were powerful statements from a curious artist catchy guitar-pop songs about being stuck in the ups and downs of life, the struggle to stay sober, to leave town, to blow up your life. West left Chicago to search for more and, in the process, wrote her new album, Heaven 2. On her journey, she landed in New Mexico, where she lived off the grid in Taos. InchIt was very challenging, freezing, infested with poisonous animals. But it's still the most beautiful and magical place I've ever been and I dream about it all the time,Inch West says. She then made her way to Iceland, where she lived for two years on and off, with the off being in London, where she grew up. Eventually, she made her way to Reykjavik and settled in with the music community and released an instrumental album (If I Were A Real Man I Would Be Able To Break The Neck Of A Suffering Bird) before heading to Los Angeles, where she has fallen in love and found herself settled. L.A. has been a good place to live, if for no other reason than, in West's words, Inchwherever you go, there you are. I wish there was a cooler way to say that.Inch Fortunately, there are This theme of finding beauty and fulfillment wherever one can permeates Heaven 2. On InchEven Mountains Erode,Inch West sings, InchThere are symbols and signs, you're missing your life.Inch West encourages herself, and us, to slow

Suk, Martinu, and Fiser in the creative hands of young virtuososThe Supraphon debut of 18-year-old Daniel Matejca (Ysaye - Violin Sonatas,2023) has attracted great attention with critics around the world writingabout his remarkable talent, comparing his recording with the very best. That same year, the 17-year-old pianist Jan Schulmeister came away fromTexas with third prize at the prestigious Cliburn Junior Competition. And alsothat year, the Matejca - Schulmeister duo celebrated victory in the chambermusic category at the competition Concertino Praga; that opened themthe door to the studio for the making of this recording. Instead of brilliant, virtuosic show pieces, the young artists chose challenging Czech repertoireof the 20th century with pivotal works by Suk, Martinu, and Lubos Fiser.Martinu composed his Czech Rhapsody in the USA just after the end ofthe Second World War for Fritz Kreisler, who was 70 years old by then. Eventoday, this beautiful composition is a great technical challenge for the soloist.Martinu's First Violin Sonata (1929) still belongs to the composer's Paris period,as can be seen from jazz elements and the sometimes impressionistic moodof the piano part. The third composer, Lubos Fiser, is known mainly in hishomeland, but his music also earned international awards (UNESCO prize,Prix d'Italia). His violin sonata The Hands was originally supposed to have beentitled Crux, but that was completely unacceptable during the period of harshcommunist rule. In the words of Ivan straus, who premiered the sonata,Inchthe composition could be interpreted as a loose depiction of the Stationsof the Cross at Easter with dramatic moments of whipping, hatred, andanxiety followed by a funeral procession (pizzicato) and then the gloriousResurrection in the concluding apotheosis to the sound of bells.Inch Album Tracks 1. Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 17
