Intakt Records is thrilled to this first collaboration with pianist Alexis Marcelo - a mesmerizing solo debut! A contagious exuberance of playing, energetic explosive improvisations, and an openness to jazz tradition and experimentation combine on this album to create an impressive musical statement. InchAlmost everything he plays affirms his history and culture as a first-generation American, the son of a Panamanian mother and a Dominican father. Growing up in the Bronx and in Queens during hip hop's first years - the first jazz he heard were samples - hearing salsa and merengue at home, attending Latino evangelical churches, and - yes - studying classical music at the Harlem School of the Arts shaped Marcelo's identification as an African Latino with an inclusive sensibility(...)Once artists establish a strong identity, they can draw outside the lines, smudge them, even erase them, without diluting or diminishing that identity. That is what Alexis Marcelo has done with Solo PianoInch, writes Bill Shoemaker in the liner notes. Album Tracks 1. Boogieminish Bop 2. Break Bread 3. Have Mercy 4. A Saca Camote 5. 1010 Wins 6. An object in motion stays in motion, as Newton eloquently explained. Thus we have the link connecting one enterprising artist to another. With Motivity, his fifth album to date, saxophonist Alex Lore draws a direct line from his chordless trio approach to that of his mentor, the late Lee Konitz, on Motion (Verve, 1961). Working with two of the finest rhythm modernists on today's scene-bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Johnathan Blake-LoRe upholds his reputation as an inveterate creative, presenting a thoughtfully constructed program highlighting his love for melody, communion and pure improvisation as they relate to both the source material and his own search for meaning in music.
