One of Elgar's greatest works, The Dream of Gerontius is his setting of Cardinal Newman's poem about a dying man's journey from his deathbed to his judgment before God and his placement in Purgatory. The work is not a traditional oratorio; instead, it is a hauntingly beautiful and transformative journey of the soul. Elgar himself said of it, InchI've written it out of my insidest inside.Inch This BBC recording was captured live at the Royal Albert Hall during the 2022 BBC Proms season. Edward Gardner conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir, with the Hallé Choir, in what was described by The Guardian as a Inchperfectly judged performance.Inch The recording features a cast of three world-class soloists - Allan Clayton, Jamie Barton, and James Platt - celebrated for their individual excellence and compelling interpretation of their roles. This is a grandly scaled, nobly contoured reading, by turns monumental and ferociously dramatic. With biting choral attack, searing, spitting strings and scything trumpets, the Dies irae has a terrifying intensity I have rarely heard equalled. The Rex tremendae, too, is overwhelming in it's desperate fervour and grimly sustained impetus, with the inexorable dotted rhythms hewn from granite... If you want a traditionally conceived budget-price Requiem, well sung, superbly played and vividly recorded, Davis's performance has much to commend it.Inch (Gramophone) Album Tracks 1. Requiem Und Kyrie 2. Dies Irae 3. Tuba Mirum 4. Rex Tremendae 5. Recordare 6. Confutatis Maledictis 7. Lacrimosa 8. Domine Jesu 9. Hostias 10. Sanctus 11. Benedictus 12. Agnus Dei
