About this product
Although operas make up the most substantial part of Mercadante's catalogue, his technically challenging flute concertos are notable examples of 19th-century Italian instrumental music, effectively closing the Classical period for this instrument. Built on the agile writing and bel canto style that characterized the Neapolitan school, the Concerto in D major is unique in Mercadante's catalogue in being for two flutes. The great mutual respect between Mercadante and Rossini is brought vividly to life in the theme used for the masterly 'Tema con variazione.' The 'Capricci' can be compared with those for violin by Paganini, and the joyous 'Sixth Concerto' makes varied and eloquent use of the orchestra. Patrick Gallois belongs to the generation of French musicians leading highly successful international careers as both soloist and conductor. From the age of 17 he studied the flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal at the Paris Conservatoire and at the age of 21 was appointed principal flute in the Orchestre national de France. He held this post until he began pursuing his solo career in 1984. Album Tracks 1. Concerto for Two Flutes in D Major (1816) 2. Introduzione, Largo, Tema Con Variazioni for Flute and Orchestra (C. 1817-19) 3. Flute Concerto No. 6 in D Major, (C. 1818-19) 4. Flute Concerto in Major [No. 5] (C. 1817-19) 5. 20 Capricci for Flute (C. 1811-14)

Saverio Mercadante was one of Italy's ground-breaking composers in the development of opera, admired by contemporaries such as Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi. But during the years 1814 to 1820, inspired by fellow conservatoire students and their virtuoso teachers, he embarked on a series of works for the flute. They include seven concertos, happy exceptions to the rule in opera-obsessed Italy of the day. The solo writing is vividly characterized; full of technical demands perfectly adapted to the instrument's then more limited capabilities and permeated with a rich bel canto lyricism. Album Tracks 1. Flute Concerto No 1 in E Major, Op 49 - Patrick Gallois/Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvaskyla 2. Flute Concerto No 2 in E minor, Op 57 - Patrick Gallois/Sinfonia Finlandia Jyvaskyla 3. Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach's oldest son, enjoyed a reputation as one of Germany's finest organists, but his career was one of mixed fortunes and he died in poverty. The dating of his Six Duets is the subject of speculation, but their level of technical sophistication is quite remarkable. Each instrument is given equal status in music that is full of the kind of joyous brilliance, passion and free-mindedness of spirit that transcends virtuosity and the stylistic boundaries of W.F. Bach's period. Patrick Gallois belongs to the generation of French musicians leading highly successful international careers as both soloist and conductor. From the age of 17 he studied the flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal at the Paris Conservatoire, and at the age of 21 was appointed principal flute in the Orchestre national de France. Today, he has a wide repertoire both as a conductor and a flautist, with a predilection for contemporary music. Kazunori Seo was born in Japan in 1974. He began his music studies first with his parents, and then in Paris at the Paris Conservatoire where he was awarded the Premier Prix in flute in 1998. A prizewinner of international competitions, he has gained recognition as one of the world's outstanding flautists through numerous appearances as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. Agustin Barrios Mangore was one of the greatest guitar virtuosi of his time and something of a pioneer in making recordings, which he began as early as 1910. His compositions offer a lexicon of technical and expressive devices for the guitar, from both the South American and European traditions. This penultimate volume in the series offers the scintillating Estudio No. 6 which demonstrates some of the composer's finest artistic characteristics such as poignant treble melodies and a mastery of harmonic progression. Other works include examples of the Paraguayan polka, the Zamba, Creole airs, the Serenata and many other pieces attesting to Barrios's inexhaustible individuality and variety. Celil Refik Kaya was awarded First Prize at the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition in 2012 and has since received multiple awards from several prestigious American guitar competitions, as well as the Rising Young musician of the Year by the Donizetti Classical Music Awards in Istanbul in 2017. Kaya has performed in the most prestigious concert halls and festivals around the US and Turkey, including Carnegie Hall, the Frick Collection Museum, NYCGS, Round Top, Brevard and Ankara International Music Festival, as well as numerous radio and TV broadcasts throughout the US and Turkey.
