About this product
The idea of this album came to us during the first Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020. Martina and I share a deep enthusiasm for new music and we are always eager to find the common roots of composers who have been a constant part of our development as musicians, going right back to our school years. What have Berio and Boulez in common with Bach? Firstly, polyphony. The Bach Sonatas, played here on piano and cello, are in fact Sonate a 3Inch, in which the use of different timbres and rhythms goes along with the Bach's mastery of counterpoint and the sheer inventiveness of the musical motifs. We find that these elements of the composer's creativity are also very present in the music of Berio and Boulez. In Berio's Sequenza for cello, the exploration of the idea of polyphony on a monodic instrument, the variety of atmosphere and the pure technical virtuosity find their roots in Bach's music. Boulez, with his Douze Notations for piano, pays a huge debt to the old German tradition of counterpoint, filtered through the twelvetone system of Schönberg. Boulez clearly stated that he wanted to make fun of the Second Viennese School, and yet the character of each piece and the virtuosity of each tiny nuance recall Bach's heritage, in particular his rhythmic precision and the effective way that the different 'voices' can be heard. These ideas have encouraged us to offer listeners some fascinating parallels between centuries which can seem so far from one another. We hope that re-building these bridges in our own time might help to maintain dialogues and echoes of the history of our common cultural patrimony.Inch (Michele Gamba and Martina Rudic) Album Tracks 1. Gorzanis' InchLibro de intabolatura de liutoInch (1567) is the first known case of music composed on every semitone of the octave. It is a cycle of 48 dances which explores all the fingerboard, using Renaissance modes and simple cadenza and diminution formulas. This album, conceived as a sound image of the manuscript, is recorded for the first time in it's entirety and it retains the exact order of the songs. Michele Carreca was born in Foggia and graduated in lute at InchConservatorio Santa CeciliaInch in Rome with Andrea Damiani in 2006. He attended master classes held by Paul O'Dette and in particular by Hopkinson Smith, which has been a main point of reference for his studies. He has made recordings both as a soloist and as a continuo performer for Deutsche Grammophon, Sony-DHM, BrilliantClassics, Classic Voice-Antiqua, Continuo Records, Ipsar, Rai Trade, Urania Records. Among the major composers of their era were Alessandro Scarlatti (1660 - 1725) and his son Domenico (1685 - 1757), both of whom were influenced by the music and culture of Naples - Domenico was a native of the city, his father of Palermo. Alessandro's work is thoroughly baroque - elevated in tone and broad in scope - while his son's leans towards the rococo style with a preponderance of arias and cantatas, many of which were influenced by the music of Portugal and Castille. Domenico, of course, spent much of his life in Spain. The cantata InchChe si peni in amoreInch by Domenico Scarlatti and the bipartite rondo InchOhimè tu piangi,... Nel lasciarti, o mio tesoroInch by Giuseppe Sarti find their first record here. The cantata for alto and b.c. by Domenico Scarlatti InchChe si peni in amoreInch recalls the production of his father Alessandro both in style and in writing. The mixture of arioso and recitative with which the work opens are not without originality. Some ideas such as the aria InchIo non voglio dal mio beneInch reveal the closeness of the style to that of Alessandro. The composition is probably an early work, in any case prior to Scarlatti's departure for Lisbon in 1719. Scarlatti's extraordinary ability as a harpsichordist and virtuoso was known since his youth, at least from the early testimony collected in Venice by Roseingrave (datable to around 1705/6) and quoted by Charles Burney.
