About this product
''The forest for the trees' is beautiful. To say it any other way cheapens the description.' Herohill ECMA Nominee--Female Recording of the Year 2009 Norma MacDonald is a singer-songwriter, avid biology nerd and not a bad little bowler. She was raised on AM country stations and Willie Nelson cassettes in her hometown of New Waterford, Cape Breton, but has made her home in Halifax, NS for the last number of years. On her sophomore recording, 'the forest for the trees', MacDonald manages to seamlessly meld her innate old-school country sensibilities with more mainstream influences (Wilco, Patty Griffin and Bruce Springsteen) without losing a drop of authenticity. By the time the band kicks in on the opening track Incha little longerInch, one gets a sense they are listening to an artist who has finally come into her own. Juxtopositioning lyrical sophistication with playfulness (check out the anthemic, pedal steel driven InchsandInch) MacDonald balances a visceral sense of nostalgia and longing with hopefulness for what lies ahead. On Inchwe're ghostsInch she sings the refrain InchLet me come back as a flesh and blood reminder of the pastInch with an almost otherworldly conviction. Album Tracks 1. Little Longer 2. Everyone Let's You Down 3. Almost There 4. Water on the Moon 5. Pulling on a Thread 6. Long Shot 7. We're Ghosts 8. Unseasonably Warm 9. Sand 10. So Soundly

Vinyl LP pressing. 2020 . Norma MacDonald's voice hits the nerve that runs down the spine of the Appalachians from Canada's east coast to the Smokey Mountains, tinging in the tension between storyteller folk and classic country. Old Future leans into nostalgia and contradiction, picking up 1960's Dolly and Loretta vibes with a spotlight on the pedal steel while nodding to 1970's California folk-rock with layered acoustic guitars and rich harmonies. MacDonald co-produced the album with Dale Murray (The Guthries, Hayden) who played on her previous albums. Their musical kinship sounds effortless here, but MacDonald's songs are the heartbeat of the album, swinging between familiar stories of Inchgood luck and heart acheInch without cliché. Born in Cape Breton, MacDonald is a staple of the Halifax music scene. Her four previous albums were critical darlings, received numerous Music Nova Scotia and ECMA award nominations, and received considerable airplay in North America and the UK. Album Tracks 1. Temperamental Year 2. Trick of the Light 3. Golden Age 4. One Man Band 5. Your Wedding Day 6. Wonder in the Summer 7. Slow Down Marie 8. I Already Have a Shadow 9. Lover of Unreason 10. Some Days
