About this product
The pieces in the present collection give a virtually complete idea of Franck's quality as a piano composer. We have selected from his early works only those which seemed to indicate most faithfully that somewhat neglected period in his life. We have included all the piano compositions of his later years. From the early works we have chosen the Grande Sonate op 10 (unpublished) written at the age of thirteen years, the Eglogue (1842), the Grand Caprice (1843), the Ballade (1844) and Trois petits riens (1846) (unpublished) preceding them with César Franck's three first efforts in composition. The mature style of the master is shown in his four most important piano works, the Prelude, Chorale and Fugue (1884), Les Djinns for piano and orchestra (1884), Variations symphoniques for piano and orchestra (1885), the Prelude, Aria and Finale (1886), and also in two short pieces, Plaintes d'une poupée (1865) and Danse lente (1885), written for special occasions. Though the latter are simple in style and technique, they show none the less the unmistakable stamp of Franckian melody.

Of all the instruments that have marked the course of musical history, the piano has certainly gone through one of the most remarkable evolutions. It began as an intermediary, transitory stage between two instrumental traditions. Following it's invention by Bartolomeo Cristofori at the beginning of the 18 the century, the piano gradually replaced the plucked strings of the harpsichord with a hammered, striking action; this innovation enabled a far wider range of dynamic nuance, increasingly winning over musicians and composers in the 18th and above all in the 19th century. After Cristofori, the German keyboard maker Gottfried Silbermann further developed the instrument, and it's sound eventually became more like that of the modern piano as we know it. In the quest for interpretations that get as close as possible to those of past eras, some of today's pianists have adopted the early pianoforte, offering the listener the opportunity to discover the sounds the composer would have heard and conceived. Firmly convinced of the rightness of this approach, Alpha has collected 10 albums of these recordings, in an attractively produced set, presenting works by a number of different composers, including Haydn, Chopin, Beethoven and Schumann, performed by some of the tag's iconic pianists, such as Freddy Eichelberger, Jos van Immerseel, Alexei Lubimov, and Eric Le Sage. This album celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Association of Friends of the Baroque Organ and demonstrates Langenbogen's rich musical life. Up to now, the Association has organized more than 100 events. This presents mainly organ works played by Thomas Ennenbach. In addition, we hear the Association's Chairman Ralf Mielke (solo flautist in Halle Staatskapelle), and members of the Ensemble Arco Lungo. Considering the age of St. Magdalenen in Langenbogen near Halle, one would not expect to find a Baroque organ inside. The church was rebuilt in 1826 replacing a Gothic predecessor, but surprisingly, still holds an 18th century organ, the history of which had been unclear for a long time. When the Association of Friends of the Baroque Organ was founded in 2001, the organ was in a deplorable state. On 31 October 2003, the instrument was dismantled by master organ builder Ekkehart Gro and transported to his workshop in Waditz near Bautzen for restoration. During the restoration period, the history of the organ was discovered. An inscription found in the wind chest said that Weienfels court organ builder Georg Theodor Klo built this organ in 1735, though it remains unclear for which church it was built. The Halle organ builder Johann Gottfried Kurtze then transferred the organ to the new Langenbogen church in 1826. For the Klo Organ with it's 529 sounding pipes, intensive and varied use began on 31 May 2004 and continues to this day.
