About this product
20 tracks new to CD. First ever anthology of Sunshot Records. Includes numerous Jamaican chart hits. The growing international interest in Jamaican music as the 60s progressed emboldened increasing numbers of dynamic and ambitious music makers on the island to launch their own record labels. By the close of the decade, Kingston's recording industry was awash with such talent, with this new generation of enterprising record producers including such future luminaries as Lee Perry, Joe Gibbs, Bunny Lee, Harry Johnson, Lloyd Charmers and the man whose early productions provide the focus of this compilation George Phillips AKA Phil Pratt. The singer-turned-producer whose initial recordings had been distributed by former Skatalites' road manager Ken Lack introduced his Sunshot Records tag early in 1969, finding almost immediate success with major Jamaican hits by celebrated singer Ken Boothe. Encouraged by these early triumphs, Pratt swiftly expanded his artists roster to include other major stars on the burgeoning reggae scene, with the likes of John Holt, Dennis Alcapone, Pat Kelly and Horace Andy all scoring significant hits with the producer. This first Doctor Bird volume of Phil Pratt's productions brings together almost the entirety of output from his from the first two years of his career as a record tag manager and features numerous major hits alongside an abundance of obscurities that have remained unissued since their original over 50 years ago. Digitally remastered and expanded edition. After launching his Beverley's Records tag in the early 1960s, Leslie Kong quickly established a reputation as being one of the sharpest operators in the Jamaican music business. By the close of the decade he had exceeded all expectations for a Kingston-based record producer after releasing a number of recordings that not only topped the local charts, but also breached pop listings around the world. The hit-rate continued into the 1970s, as Kong's tight and breezy production style ensured such esteemed acts as the Maytals, the Melodians, the Pioneers, Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff all made the UK mainstream charts. In the autumn of 1970, Trojan Records released Hot Shots Of Reggae, showcasing a dozen of the producer's most popular recordings from the preceding months. The strikingly designed album swiftly became one of the company's best sellers, yet despite it's popularity has remained unissued in any since it's original . That oversight has finally been addressed and here, at long last, is the glorious LP in it's entirety, with the original dozen tracks augmented by a further 13 Kong-produced recordings from the glorious, golden age of reggae. Album Tracks 1. Freedom Street - Ken Boothe 2. Sweet Sensation - the Melodians 3. Monkey Man - the Maytals 4. Why Baby Why - Ken Boothe 5. Cotton Dandy - Ansel Collins & the Beverley's All Stars 6. UK two CD set. From the 1950s, when his sound system ruled Kingston's dancehalls, through to his untimely passing early in 1975, Arthur 'Duke' Reid remained a giant of the Jamaican music industry, playing, promoting and producing some of the most important and influential recordings ever to see issue on the island. Such was the quality of his work that long after his old friend, Sonia Pottinger had acquired his Treasure Isle studio and catalog, demand for his productions persisted, prompting the regular reissue of his hits, be they in original form, as remixes, DJ cuts or dub versions. Fortunately, in Errol Brown, Pottinger had in her employ one of Jamaica's foremost sound engineers, whose talents at the mixing desk ensured the high quality of any reinterpretations of Reid's work, as evidenced by a trio of dub albums he oversaw in the mid-Seventies. These three seminal long-players provide the focus for this essential set, with disc one comprising both volumes of Treasure Dub and disc two featuring Pleasure Dub along with a host of rare and previously unissued bonus dub cuts from the period. The result is arguably the finest collection of classic dub music for decades! Album Tracks 1. De Pauper a Dub 2. Construction Dub Style 3. Dub So True 4. Arabian Dub 5. Dub I Love 6.
