About this product
Stick In The Wheel latest collaborative invites contemporary musicians to explore what the idea of traditional music and culture means to them, through the archive at Cecil Sharp House. DMC scratch champion Jon1st looks at samples and fragments of music and folklore from his home city of Leicester; DJ, musician and broadcaster Nabihah Iqbal discovers the Dorset folk songs contemporary to Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and Metronomy's Olugbenga focuses on Nigerian folktales and Kenyan field recordings. The result is a surprising collection of forward-thinking music looking at the notion of fragments, archives, and the function of traditional music in 2022. Whether that's the traditions of scratching and sampling, how we can relate to others across borders and cultures, or attempting to make sense of the prism of an archive, this is essential listening at the cutting-edge of experimentation through the blurring of forms. Album Tracks 1. The Milkmaid (W/ Nabihah Iqbal) 2. The Ballad of Black Annis (W/ Jon1St) 3. Farewell He (W/ Nabihah Iqbal) 4. Devil in the Well / Bright-Eyed Boy (W/ Olugbenga Adelekan) 5. Stick In The Wheel (singer Nicola Kearey, and guitarist/producer Ian Carter), blend the traditional with their own innovative and unique sound.Their debut From Here (2015) and second album Follow Them True (2018) received much critical acclaim; with the Guardian describing their music as 'razor-sharp, direct and fantastic'. Their third album Hold Fast is the creation of a band who are politically motivated, unapologetically raw, experimental and genuine. It's a made-under-pressure, no-punches-pulled unique and vivid collection of protest music in it's true sense, and in times like these it makes Stick In The Wheel one of Britain's most essential bands.Hold Fast was written and recorded in the six months preceding the global pandemic. As the impending situation closed in, there was Incha real sense of urgency, how it was crucial to get it right, a feeling that we can't mess it up,Inch says Carter. With most of the work taking place at the band's own studio, there was an intensity to the sessions, with Carter ultimately moving into the studio to produce and mix it as the world went into lockdown. Given the timing, the album's key themes of struggle and seem salient now more than ever. Kearey says, InchThis record is about working hard in the face of adversity, focusing on the positive, questioning the canon and making an offering with hope and resilience for the future.Inch Album Tracks 1. A Tree Must Stand in the Earth 2. Budg & Snudg 3. Top Knot 4. Villon Song 5. Gold So Red 6. Fake Away 7. Soldier Soldier 8. Possible Reasons for Eventual Admission to the Asylum 9. Drive the Cold Winter Away 10. Nine Herb Charms 11. Forward
