The Brave One - BLU-RAY

A film full of warmth and sensitivity. InchThe Brave OneInch is story about the friendship of a boy and a bull. Gitano or Gypsy is the name the boy gives the bull whose life he saves during a storm. The animal follows him around like a puppy until the legal owners spirit the mature Gitano away to do battle with top matador Fermin Rivera in the Plaza de Mexico bullring in Mexico City. The boy protests in vain at the cruelty of the arena and finally secures a InchpardonInch for his pet signed by the President of Mexico but he is too late. The bullfight continues. What follows is such a display of courage that the crowd calls for the InchundultoInch a demand that the bull be allowed to live. Based on a true incident, the film earned a InchBest StoryInch Academy Award for Robert Rich - who, much to the embarrassment of the Academy turned out to be blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.

Arthur Laurent's' play HOME OF THE BRAVE concerned a paralyzed Jewish war veteran who begins to walk again only when he confronts his fear of forever being an 'outsider.' the film version of the Laurent's play changes the protagonist into an African-American, played by James Edwards. The soldier's comrades include his lifelong white friend Lloyd Bridges, whose death leaves Edwards racked with guilt; redneck-bigot corporal Steve Brodie; and troubled sergeant Frank Lovejoy. In the film's crucial scene, the doctor Jeff Corey forces Edwards to overcome his paralysis by yelling a racial slur; from this point on, Edwards will never again kowtow to prejudice. As corny and condescending as it may sound, HOME OF THE BRAVE is one of the few films produced during the late-1940s 'tolerance' cycle that plays as well today as it did when first released.
