About this product

'Cristiano Porqueddu is a master guitarist,' says the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, 'and one of the foremost representatives of the new generation of soloists. He brings sound to life, and then turns it into art.' Like many of the other composers in this remarkable collection, he has composed more than one piece for Porqueddu and now pays tribute with a piece which draws inspiration from the guitarist's homeland of Sardinia. Diálogo del Olivo y el Nuraga ('Dialogue of the Olive Trees and the Nuraghe') imagines a wordless exchange between two ancient features of the Sardinian landscape, the trees which have provided food and fuel and money for it's people for centuries, and the Stone-Age towers which dot the island. Each of the works here tells a vivid story Porqueddu's own Sonata III is subtitled 'The Rite of Fire' after an ancient Sardinian legend which imagines Saint Anthony and his piglet descending to Hell in order to procure some firelight. Angelo Gilardino draws on his personal memories of sights and sounds experienced when visiting the island in his Sardegna Suite (including another piece evoking the nuraghe). Francesco Morittu is a native-born Sardinian guitarist-composer, whereas Mark Delpriora is an American guitarist who heads the guitar faculty at the Manhattan School of Music; both have contributed intensely atmospheric pieces, which capture the island's wildness as well as it's sense of isolation. Born in 1988 in the Italian province of Velletria, Kevin Swierkosz-Lenart is the youngest composer featured in the collection with a suite inspired by three works of the Sardinian painter Giuseppe Biasi, who also contributes the artwork for the collection's cover. Album Tracks 1. Ricercare di Sardegna~I. Ouverture (Launeddas) 2. Ricercare di Sardegna~II. Nuraghe 3. Ricercare di Sardegna~III. Cantico 4. Ricercare di Sardegna~IV. Prismi 5. Ricercare

Dawn of Midi - Dysnomia - VINYL LP

Double LP version. Includes download code. Channeled madness -- the sound Dawn of Midi spent years shaping culminates in their most mesmerizing work yet. With Dysnomia, the Brooklyn-based group abandons improvisation in favor of composition, utilizing sophisticated rhythmic structures from North- and West-African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. InchWe didn't want to create anything cerebral,Inch says pianist Amino Belyamani, Inchwe wanted something visceral, something that would awaken our instinctive dance impulses.Inch The manner by which a trio of solely acoustic instruments ends up sounding like electronic music has to do with the unconventional ways the group play their instruments on Dysnomia. The record comes to life in the trio's critically acclaimed live shows, a test of endurance and trust that involves performing their hand-looped acoustic minimalism note for note, just as the compositions were recorded. Dawn of Midi's sets are as energetic and rhythmic as a seamlessly mixed DJ set, mesmerizing fans in the same way the group's favorite experimental and electronic acts have for decades. The album was recorded to two-inch tape at Waterfront Studios in Hudson, New York, a former church that was purchased and transformed into an analog recording playground by the great engineer Henry Hirsch. Rusty Santos then mixed the album to make sure it would hit as hard as the group's favorite electronic albums do in spite of being entirely acoustic. InchWe wanted to make a record that sounded both musically futuristic and sonically vintage,Inch explains bassist Aakaash Israni, Inchand since the album never saw a proper international , it is very exciting to see what might happen when more people are exposed to it. And to be aligned with Erased Tapes, whose enthusiasm for the music they has done a lot for exposing unique instrumenta

Hélène Boschi's repertoire was broad-based, ranging from the Baroque (François Couperin, Jean Philippe Rameau, Johann Sebastian Bach) to contemporary music. Her favorite composers of the Viennese Classical era were undoubtedly Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert; strangely, it seems she left behind no Beethoven recordings. One notable fact about Boschi is that she was the first female pianist to record the works of Padre Antonio Soler (1729-1783), receiving the 1952 Grand Prix du Disque in honor of her achievement. As for the nineteenth century, her passionate readings of Schumann are of the utmost importance; but Carl Maria von Weber and Muzio Clementi also captured her attention, as did Frédéric Chopin and Emmanuel Chabrier and the Impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Modern classics were also integral to her repertoire - as were the works of her immediate contemporaries. Luigi Dallapiccola dedicated his 1952 piano composition Quaderno di Annalibera to Hélène Boschi, Claude Ballif paid her that honor with his Fourth Sonata op. 31 Album Tracks 26. Sonata in F Sharp minor / Sonate Fis-Moll

Rugolo Gillo - Complete Guitar Duos - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Among the most significant composers of guitar duos in the early 19th century, Antoine de Lhoyer was born in September 1768 in Clermont-Ferrand. His musical talents manifested themselves from early on, and he trained in Paris. His teacher Vidal paid tribute to him as 'the finest guitarist in Europe'. However, at the age of 20, de Lhoyer embarked on a military career as a member of the King's Guards, shortly before the French Revolution. Life in France rapidly becoming uncongenial for someone with his loyalties, he left France in a hurry and eventually settled in Hamburg, where his compositions were first published at the turn of the 19th century. de Lhoyer's travels were by no means over, and over the following decades he took up posts as a professional music teacher and performer in St Petersburg, Paris, Corsica, Aix-en-Provence and Alger, the new capital of the French colony in north Africa. Eventually returning to the French capital, he died there in 1852, at the age of 84. The extant duos on this album were composed between 1814 and 1826, and they comprise a substantial proportion of his total output. One would expect the style of his music to reflect the lively, cosmopolitan nature of his career, and so they do, often cast in three- and four-movement sonata forms with picturesque interpolations such as the 'hunt' movement of Op.35 No.2 and the graceful Sicilienne of Op.35 No.5. The eight-movement Fantasie Concertante Op.33 is like a Mozartian serenade, with a superbly flowing Andante con variazioni directly succeeded by a brief but tranquil Adagio. Album Tracks 1. Duo Concertant, Op. 31 No. 1~I. Allegro moderato brilliante 2. Duo Concertant, Op. 31 No. 1~II. Adagio cantabile 3. Duo Concertant, Op. 31 No. 1~III. Rondo. Poco vivace 4. Duo Concertant, Op. 31 No. 2~I. Allegro moderato 5. Duo Concertant, Op. 31 No. 2~II. Menuetto. Poco vivace. Trio 6.
