“I see that an internal M.2 port is listed as an expansion slot. Is that port used by the SSD that comes with the machine or is it empty out of the box? And is there a limit to the amount of space that M.2 port can support?”

• There are 2 slots, 1 occupied by the factory installed SSD card. I upgraded mine and installed 2x4 Tb cards.
