You need an app to configure the Echo or Dot. I don't own any apple products,but I would imagine the Alexa app would be in i-tunes to download to your laptop or tablet.

I use the Echo to play music, adjust my ecobee 3 thermostats, and give me updates on traffic, the weather, sports and my shopping lists. You do need to be able to use the app to get full functionality.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, the Dot, Echo etc do not require phones and are independent pieces of hardware with their own capabilities. They can do more when paired with smart devices such as phones, but that is not a requirement.
