You have to set up the Echo Dot through an app on your phone. The app may be available for access through a computer or tablet but not sure. However, once you have it set up, you don't need the phone on, the Dot just needs to be able to access the internet through a wireless network and it can access your music stations, browsers, etc.

Please try again later.You need to login to your mother's network when you do the initial setup of the Dot but after that it should work whether you are present with your iPhone or not. If you have Dots of your own, though, I'm not sure if there would be any conflicts once you change your network back to your default. The Alexa people would be very helpful with this, though, if you call them.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No, I set mine up using a tablet and that tablet is off most of the time. You use whatever device with alexa app on it to set it up to connect to wifi, and also to give it more skills.
