Does echo dot need a hub null

It needs a hub for specific items.

Depends on what you are using it for. To control lights, I believe so. Like with a Philips Hue you would need their bridge. I bought a Logitech Harmony to control my stereo, TV and cable. It depends on what you are trying to do with it
