You can play your own through dot.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you are an Amazon Prime member you get a select group of songs to play for free. I believe you can upload your music to Amazon and play it through the echo dot. You can't upload it directly. Go to Amazon and see if you can upload without going prime to be sure before ordering. If you have other services like Spotify and others it works on the dot.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can connect to the Dot via Bluetooth and play your own music from your device. I would suggest you connect your Dot via the Auxiliary jack to a decent speaker as the Dot's speakers are not really designed for full robust playback.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you have Amazon Prime, you can play any of the music available through their Prime service. That also allows you to upload about 250 songs that may not be available through their Prime service. The Prime music service is somewhat limited and does not have as deep a catalog as Spotify or Apple Music. Amazon also introduced Amazon Music, which is a streaming service for $9.99/month or $7.99 if you have Prime. That has millions of songs available, comparable to Spotify and Apple. There is a Dot only version of that service which is much cheaper. I don't know the exact price so I will not quote one here. You can not load music directly to the Dot. It only streams based on what services you have from Amazon.
