A:AnswerThe Echo Dot IS an Alexa control device. No you do not need anything else to ask questions just a network connection. It will play music from the limited library of songs it has. If you want to control other devices they must be Alexa enabled or you must purchase Alexa enabled smart plugs to turn them on/off, set timers, dimming.

A:AnswerYes the echo dot can turn lights on and off. You can also go on YouTube. I got my plugs off of marketplace cuz it was cheaper also my power strips from Amazon. I didn't do the SMART light bulbs because at the time you needed a hub. Now they have them without hubs usage. But you can also switch out your light switch in the wall but if you want to have something that's plugged up you can use the power strip or plugs.
