You have to have wifi to be able to get new books from the library or store. If its already downloaded in to your kindle then you can read offline.

Have to have WiFi to get the books.and I tried us cellular. But because fire don't have a place for sim card they cont hook me up

The kindle fire that I have needs wi-fi to get the books. Mine is the 5th generation (2015) model. I did not purchase any network systems.

Your books can be transferred to your device automatically using Whispernet, however, you must have a Wi-Fi connection for Whispernet to work. Once your books are transferred to your Kindle you do not need Wi-Fi to read the books as they are stored on your Kindle.
