Hello @Superdad, You do not need a paid a Paid Prime account to use. You can set up a free one and go from there. Certain apps (depends on the developer) ask you to pay for their app, but there are thousands of free ones and all you need is an internet connection to download. Unfortunately, the Google Play Store is not available on the Amazon Fire Tablet Platform. Hope this info helps. Have a great day!
