The meaning of open box is a product that someone bought and returned and that they sell at a cheaper price they have also been geek squad tested and approved to insure they it works correctly and is not defective

It mean that the iPad has been returned most likely, but is still in good condition or hasn’t been used

I believe the open box items are those that were used for display.
