“I have an AirTag on my dog's collar and want to check on him while I am at work, but it does not update his location. I have an iPhone at my house that is connected to it via bluetooth. Does that iPhone have to be "swiped on" to update his location?”

I didn't think these were a bluetooth device. Does the iPhone at home detect your dog's location properly? Can you test it by taking the tag a block from home or so and trying to locate it *from your house* using that iPhone? These should work without any type of service or connection - that's kinda the point. Why are you using a separate device as a 'middle-man'? You should be able to add them to your Find My app on any Apple device you're logged into with your Apple ID (perhaps not older models, though).

I assume you paired your air tag with your I phone. turn your phone on and go to the find my app. It will show you where your dog is located on a google map. I don't think it will show you exactly which room of the house he is in and remember, dogs pretty much sleep when there's nothing going on.
