“My grandchildren are home schooled. There have a lot of on-line classes they attend via Wi-Fi. They will also need to use pages, notes and numbers a lot. Will this be able to handle everything they need as well as online research?”

I would recommend a laptop instead. Tablets are good for reading electronic books and light web browsing. Intensive internet use is much better with a keyboard and mouse. Plus writing papers and filling in spreadsheets is extremely difficult on an iPad

Yes, it comes with the 3 apps that you mention already installed and they can do all their research through the safari browser, as long as you have an internet connection.

Yes it will the it has built in app and the the appstore has an app for everything you can imagine and more
