Your contract with ATT lasts as long as the contract you sign; 1 year, 2 years or maybe even 3 if they have a 3 yr plan. You can pay off the phone whenever you want, but you get locked into the contract.

I am currently paying on my new phone with them for 30 months, however, I am sure if I wanted to change to another carrier, I would be charged a penalty and/or my new carrier will pay my way out of the contract for signing with them. I would suggest researching all your options and then deciding so you won’t be having to go through the hassle of changing down the road.
