External hard drives and external Solid State Drives only increase storage by backup, such as 512GB (effective 499.7GB this machine) up to 3TB. They cannot increase memory such as 8GB to 16GB under any circumstances.

A 512GB model has internal storage of that amount and may be augmented by an external drive, often for lower prices than adding built-in. The MBA will support external drives. A 16GB memory model will improve multitasking and game playing speeds especially if you have more programs open at the same time.
