  • QuestionCan ssd be upgraded?

    Asked by Steepo.

    • Answer The short answer is no; the SSD is soldered to the main board, making replacement a non-trivial task. That said if you're feeling adventurous... Of course, you can upgrade the SSD! :) The M3 MacBook Air's SSD consists of two NAND modules, which are surface mount components. You'll need a heat gun (a rework station sets you up for success) and a basic understanding of reflow soldering. After removing the original SSD modules, clean the area thoroughly (isopropyl works well for this). Using a stencil, apply solder paste to the PCB and place the new ICs onto the solder pads. Use your heat gun to heat the chip (avoid overheating—keep temperatures around 230°C for less than 30 seconds; reflow profiles can typically be found online). Once you have a bond, boom! Updated SSD. Reassemble, cross your fingers, and power it up. Boot into DFU mode by holding the power button until the DFU splash screen appears. If all goes well, pat yourself on the back because you are awesome! Alternatively, you can custom order the MacBook Air M3 from Apple in 1 or 2TB variations. While this option is easier and safer, it doesn’t have the added benefit of making you a legend.
