“I have not touched the default screen timeout (or other) settings, which are for the screen to turn off after 3 min on battery and 5 min plugged in, but the screen often goes off after 1 minute of idle time. Fully updated system and drivers. Suggestions?”

Open up the Power Options and make changes when plugged in and when using battery. I set mine to 3min to sleep and the battery lasts a long time because if you get up and leave it sleeps and resumes when you come back.
