I tried the exact same thing with my magnetic antenna. Signal drops were more frequent. I purchased the home antenna for work. And, used that. It worked much better. I home antenna with the hinge facing in the traveling direction so it wouldn't flop around. And, I fixed it in place with durabond. Happy camper, here. (All pun intended).
