• Pretty sure you do. I don't like apps tied to products either, but it sure made paring a breeze, & I can see where it'd be used to put new firmware on the device. You do NOT need the app on everything you pair it to, tough.

• You can if you chose to. By downloading the apk it allows you to utilize some of the features you may not without an apk. But to be honest with you the sound is just to par with the older model. I would suggest the sony wf 1000 xm3 because the sound is by far better.

• I use them with Spotify , the app allows you to customize the the features such as the touch controls and noise cancelation setting
