You can use the earbuds with no sound. If so, you'll definitely hear a fire or smoke alarm. Bose is concerned that people might miss alarms, so they warn not to play their sounds too loudly.

However, once you try these out, you'll find that there is a generous selection of audio tracks and you can adjust the volume to as minimum as you want. Loud noises can be heard even with the audio on. I've been completely satisfied with the Sleepbuds II. With a husband whose snoring can vibrate windows, Sleepbuds have been so important for my mental and physical health! I had two pairs of the first version (one as a back up) and when the internal batteries finally died, I just kept wearing them as they still did a great job of blocking out most noise.
