“I currently have my TV sound (sound off on TV) outputting to a SONY stereo receiver which outputs to an older Bose® Acoustimass system. Instead of connecting the BOSE SOLO to the TV, can I connect it to the receiver using the optical audio cable?”

Hi LL, thank you for your question. We do not recommend connecting in this way as the Solo 5 is designed to be directly connected to your TV and already has a receiver built in to amplify the sound.
