They can be empty, but you do need to have them inserted. You'll need to go into your printer settings and choose black & white.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I am not sure. I haven’t have this printer long enough to need new toner. However, I have a different printer at home and it does require color cartridges to print black and white, otherwise it won’t print. I hope this somehow answers your question.
