• NO. both the 244 color and 245 black/white cartridges must have ink or it will report "Out of ink". you can not have an empty color cartridge and print in gray scale - it will insist you replace the color cartridge before printing. ALSO - i've had questionable scan abilities when there is no ink in the color cartridge. This may be one of those printers that intentionally scan poorly when you don't buy ink for it.
