Yes you are correct and I do the same thing myself.

If volume is still coming from your computer, go to your volume preferences and choose "External Speakers" which should also show some ID of the TV you are connected to.

It should. Make sure Comp. side is HDMI out and TV is HDMI in.

It should work as you mentioned. Your laptop should automatically switch to the correct television resolution when the hdmi cable is connected. If your laptop does not automatically switch to your television then you will need to play around with the laptop display settings to get it to out put to your television.
