“For the life of me, I cannot get this mount to go flat against the wall where it is approximately 2-3 inches from the wall as advertised. Not even close. What am I doing wrong?”

Check that the brackets are both mirror images of each other. They must fold inward together. You might have to reach around to help one or the other to head in the same direction. It helps too to loosen the bracket allen screws just a bit.
