• This adapter works for laptops that have Mini DisplayPort.

• I think you would be better off to get a Mini-DisplayPort (i.e., Thunderbolt) to VGA adapter (Insignia SKU: 5813139) to do this. An HDMI adapter is designed to connect a MAC to a TV (both video and audio output) rather than to a Monitor. Most older monitors will accept a VGA connection so this adapter should be a better fit for an older MAC as you have described. I am using this adapter to connect a 2013 iMAC to a VGA monitor and it works beautifully.
