Yes the metal rods act as the filter. I partially wet a paper towel and wipe off the black stuff until all rods are cleaned and shiny. Be sure that the rods are dry before installing back. Hope this helps

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Alcohol will remove smoking residue, which is particularly hard to get rid of. After wiping with alcohol, finish cleaning with weak detergent solution and dry with paper towels or, better yet, a microfiber cleaning cloth.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes it has the flat rods. You can use warm soapy water to clean them with. I found it very easy to clean however you will need to let it dry for several hours and if you drench it you will have to let it dry for at least 24 hours.
