Can you print without color cartridges? Are you able to still print in black and white if the color cartridges are empty? Or do you HAVE to put in new color cartridges to only print in black and white? I know some printers won't print at all if at least 1 ink cartridge is out of ink.

You can print in black only without the other colors. I have mine set on black only.

if even one of the five cartridges are empty, the printer simply will not print. you must replace the empty cartridge in order for this stupid printer to move. i have had my printer 3 months, printed about 45 sheets - only about 4 of them color & gone through 2 sets of cartridges. this machine eats ink! it also has paper jams everyday & the scanner doesn't scan photos. i hate this epson! i think i shall put it in the garbage & buy a canon - it will be cheaper in the long run.

Singularly the worst printer I've ever used. Not quality wise but functionality. Even with full black cartridges (both of them) the printer bricks itself and refuses to print unless you replace the missing color which you don't need for the job. Also, pro tip. NEVER update the software if you are planning on using any more reasonably priced after market ink cartridges. If you want to blow all you budget on the massively overpriced Epson ones, go right ahead.
