So here's the details Charlie, the Fitbit HR as well as the others can also be used on a computer. It works just like the app for smartphones, but you just have to wait till you get home if friends send you and challenge requests. I find it convenient to be able to look at my fitness graphs at any time but if your aren't very tech savvy then a computer will get you started! The Fitbits come with a usb dongle (like a flash drive) that will allow it to find your computer. The program is called the "Fitbit Dashboard" and can be downloaded from the Fitbit website. However, if you want to look at past days, compare any data over time, you would need to sync it online. You can do that with any computer, as well as any phone or tablet mobile device. If you use it with a computer, it has both the USB charging cord as well as a USB receiver for wireless syncing. All of this said, it can simply be a stand alone device for tracking that particular days statistics. However, without syncing it to some type of device you would not be able to see any past days statistics.

Use of the phone or Laptop is needed to read-out results using the Fitbit App, but it need not be connected. Info is transferred wirelessly via Bluetooth.
