“Does this microwave allow you to use the timer while you are cooking something? My old microwave had that function. I could set a timer for something else while I was cooking in it. I thought it was standard but it’s not.”

The Timer is on while you're cooking / heating up something in the microwave & stops when "heating up" is finished. The timer is only set when you have something in the microwave & cannot be used for other purposes.
