You can position the vent fan to exhaust through the back, top, or front. I believe that as long as the fan is positioned in the correct venting position - base on your ductwork - that it should be fine. The owners manual and the manufacturer should be able to answer this for sure as I am not a certified installer. I positioned my fan to vent out the front - for recirculation.

We certainly understand your concern over venting, and can advise there should not be any objects, including cabinetry, to block the airflow of the unit from the top vent. There is a cover plate included with the unit, however, to cover any parts that need to be. If you are concerned that cover plate may not have been installed, instructions are available. The Installation Instructions can be found on our GE website if you look for your model number and select the product page; if you then click the 'Owner Support' link under the picture of the appliance, that document is available.
