Hi J - The unit is 6.5 amps, which takes in account the highest draw, which is the defrost system (occurs twice a day). We do not test the unit on inverters, so we cannot comment on whether you would need a pure sine wave or a modified sine wave current. We recommend plugging it into a grounded 3-prong outlet on a 15 or 20 amp dedicated 120v circuit. Thanks for viewing GE! Sue
